M.N.V.G. Adiyodi
Former President, Kerala State Pharmacy Council
Thiruvananthapuram |
A champion of movements initiated for the cause of practicing Pharmacists in India
Madathil Nadakavu Venu Gopalan Adiyodi left us from this world on 26th October 2006 at SUT hospital, Thiruvananthapuram. He was ailing for some time after a major surgery for cancer at Lakeshore Hospital, Ernakulam in April 2006. He was 56. His sad and untimely demise created an irreparable loss for all those know him and a deep vacuum in the pharmacy profession in the country in general and the State of Kerala in particular. As a Pharmacy professional he made full use of his life for the profession of Pharmacy. As a service organization leader and politician, he has served the government servants for decades as their trustworthy leader, guide and philosopher.
M.N.V.G. Adiyodi was a politician among politicians and a professional among professionals. He never brought politics into profession, which he could have done easily. He fought tooth and nail for the causes and rights of the government employees as their leader. Adiyodi was always at the frontline in the fight for the development of the profession of pharmacy in Kerala and India. He was an adamant and fearless fighter for the cause of Pharmacy and the working pharmacist.
M.N.V.G. Adiyodi was the President of the Kerala State Pharmacy Council and the Member of Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) for 17 years, from 1989 - 2006. He was the Executive Committee Member of the PCI from 1993 0 2000. At the time of demise he was the member of the Finance Committee and Law Committee of the PCI. He rose from humble beginning as a hospital pharmacist in Kerala Government Service in 1970 to all the positions in the profession, trade union and politics. He was the general secretary of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kerala, one of his dream concepts in the Pharmacy Profession.
M.N.V.G. Adiyodi has served about two decades as the chairman and general secretary of joint Council, a quality conscious trade union in Kerala. As the Leader of joint Council, he fought against corruption in civil services and for that purpose led a 56 day march from the northern district of Kerala, Kasargode to the southern district Thiruvananthapuram in 1986 which was well received and acclaimed by all sections of people in the state. While fighting for their cause he never forgot to remind the government servants about their duties and obligations to the society. Under the banner of Joint Council Adiyodi initiated 'change civil service' movement in 1988 in Kerala. From the state level he rose to the national level and united the service organizations. Adiyodi became the national general secretary of the all India State Employees Co-ordination Committee. After retirement from Government service in January 2006, he became a member of the national council of Communist Party of India (CPI). He has shown extraordinary skills in coordinating the professional responsibilities and the service organization activities.
He was a beacon of inspiration and motivation for the ever neglected sections of the pharmacy profession like the community pharmacists and the hospital pharmacists. He has made commendable contribution for their growth and development. He was a day-night fighter for the upliftment of the pharmacists and the profession of pharmacy in the country. Adiyodi has shown untiring efforts and inspiriting enthusiasm in handling issues related to the pharmacy profession both at the state and national levels. He has taken earnest and sincere efforts to develop the profession at various levels.
M.N.V.G. Adiyodi was always committed and dedicated for bringing improvements in the profession of pharmacy. He has shown keen interests in the issues related to the practicing pharmacists and teaching community. He was a skillful organizer, visionary, adventurist and a fighter. But always he made himself as a kind, light hearted and cheerful friend and companion of all sections particularly of pharmacists from the grass root level to the top. He was a leader with simplicity, honesty and good human values.
As a professional Adiyodi never tried to make any one feel small or less important. He did not take advantage of those who were weaker or poor. He was always generous and friendly to his critics and opponents as to his supporters and friends in pharmacy. He respected his opponents and listened their views and suggestions. Both as a professional and as a political leader Adiyodi has shown no hesitation in cooperating with organizations or individuals having different political or ideological concepts and backgrounds in movements towards achieving a common aim or objective. He was a champion of various movements initiated for the cause of Pharmacy. After 35 years of service with Kerala Government, Adiyodi retired as state store verification officer in January 2006 at the age of 55.
During the period from 1970 when he joined Government service as a Pharmacist to 2006 when he retired form service, he has grown to the stature of a well respected and popular pharmacist in the country. For many years he was the president or secretary of the Kerala Govt. Pharmacists Association. Later he extended his service sphere to other states in the country and finally became the leader of the national organization of Pharmacists - Federation of Indian Pharmacists Organization (FIPO). Through the Kerala Government Pharmacists Association and the FIPO, Adiyodi became a pioneering leader of practicing pharmacists at the national level.
When we took charge as the President of Kerala State Pharmacy Council in 1989, the council was in a deplorable condition. It had its office stationed in the corridor of the Kerala state drugs control department. The gross assets of the council was its three employees and a bank balance of about rupees two lakhs. The council could make many land mark progress and mile stones under his astute leadership and guidance. He has introduced a welfare scheme for the registered working pharmacists through the council. During his time the state Pharmacy council could make its own impressive 'Pharmacy Bhavan', a three storied building with all facilities, amenities and equipments.
In 1990, within a period of one and a half years time of taking charge of the Council, three inspectors of the State Pharmacy Council were appointed to inspect the community pharmacies and the hospital pharmacies in the state to ensure the appointment of pharmacists where medicines are dispensed and to guarantee their presence in the pharmacies during working times. All the three inspectors were pharmacy teachers working in government pharmacy colleges in the state. These inspectors were appointed as per the provisions of the pharmacy Act 1948, through Govt. Order No 3085 / Health & Family Welfare dated 11.10.1990. During his last days he had given a proposal to the Government to appoint 4 full time pharmacy inspectors in lieu of the existing 7 part time pharmacy inspectors in the state.
In 2002 Adiyodi started 'Pharma Kalolsav' participating all Pharmacy colleges in the state. Since then every alternate years the Pharma kalolsav is conducted in the state where thousands of Pharmacy students meet and assemble for two or three days and exhibit their cultural and artistic talents. The state pharmacy council could also initiate many new ventures like starting of continuing education programs for the registered pharmacists, welfare schemes for service pharmacists, computer education and training programs for pharmacists, awards for various categories of pharmacy professionals and various regular publications. The council has also published many reference book like 'Pharmacists Desk Reference'.
In 2003, the Pharmaceutical Society of Kerala was formed as a dream project of M.N.V.G. Adiyodi. The Society was established as a subsidiary of the Kerala State Pharmacy Council and registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860 with Registration No.1177 of 2003. The society has its head quarters at Pharmacy Bhavan, Red Cross Road, Thiruvananthapuram. The Pharmaceutical Society of Kerala aims to promote the status and ethics of the profession of pharmacy and to ensure quality pharmaceutical care to the public in general and the sick in particular. Academic institutions with research facilities, drug manufacturing units, quality assurance laboratories, model community Pharmacies and chain Pharmacies with whole sale and retail activities, drug information centers, publication of scientific journals and books, welfare schemes for members and charitable activities are some of the pipeline project of the Society.
The Pharmaceutical Society has acquired 5 acres of beautiful land at Pantheerankavu at Kozhikode, adjacent to the national high way by pass road. It is and ideal and serene location for academic activities. The site is earmarked for the Kerala Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (KIPER) which has got Government approval (NOC) for starting B.Pharm course. The KIPER is designed to be a center of academic excellence in pharmacy in Kerala with state of art facilities for education up to Phd. Level. It will be center for training and continuous education for all sections of pharmacists and teachers in pharmacy.
M.N.V.G. Adiyodi was the founder secretary of the Society and continued till his death. Even after his surgery in April 2006, he was very much associated with the society activities though often health problem and the chemotherapy compelled him to take rest. He was having many dreams about the society. After retirement from government service all those who were instrumental in the formation of the Society wished, hoped and prayed that Adiyodi will find more time society.
While he was ill, always he used to discuss the progress and development of the various projects envisaged by the Society. It was on the day before his death, that he expressed his desire to be cremated near the premises of the proposed KIPER to his wife and son. He was cremated as per his wish in the KIPER premises on 27th October 2006 at noon. The Society has decided to establish KIPER as a monument to MNVG Adiyodi.
Thousands of people politicians, service organizations, professionals of pharmacy and the public came to pay their last respect to M.N.V.G. Adiyodi. His body was transported from Thiruvananthapuram to Kozhikode on 26th October night. Hundreds of people paid their homage at various centers even during the mid night and the wee hours. The heavy rain or the night journey could not prevent the gathering of people at many places in large numbers necessitating the ambulance to stop at many places other than the preplanned centers. He loved every body and he was loved by all.
